There are a lot of different pokergames. The most popular by far is Texas Hold’em. The rules of Texas Hold’em are pretty straightforward: Every round all the players get 2 cards faced down, only for you to see. During the round five card are being laid on the table, facing up. There are multiple bettingrounds, and the player with the best combination of cards at the end of the round wins all the bets.
Lets visualise a round of Texas Hold’em to make it some more clear. First the dealer deals 2 faced down cards to all the players. Every player can only see his or her own cards. Then the player on the left of the dealer places a small blind and the next player a big blind. The blinds are obligated bets, to make playing for the pot worth a while. How high the blinds are diffrents with game, and in what stage the game is. Usually it starts low, and gets higher as the game progresses. After the blinds have been betted, the player on the left of the big blind is up. He has 3 choices: Folding, which means you give back your cards, you lose you bet if you already betted, and you don’s play this round anymore.
If you Call the bet, you have to equal the already existing highest bet on the table.
Raising is the last possibility, which means you can bet more than the already existing bet.
Every player gets these three choices, and the round continues until everybody called the bet or folded his cards. If there is only one player left, he gets the pot and a new game can begin. If there are more players in the game, the proceed to the flop.
The flop are the first 3 open cards that will be dealt on the table, after the first bettinground is done. After the flop there is another bettinground, started by the player left of the dealer. After this bettinground the dealer will deal the Turn, which is the forth open card on the table. Then there is another bettinground, after which the last card will be placed open on the table which is called the River. After the River there is one final bettinground. After this betting the remaining players show their cards and the highest combination wins the pot.
The player with the best combination of 5 cards, of the possible 7 cards (2 in the hand, and 5 open on table) wins. The highest combination is a royal flush: 5 succesive cards that share a color. The lowest is a highcard, a single card if you have no combination at all.
Below are all the possible combinations from best to worst.
