Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is the most widely played casino banking game in the world. Blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer, meaning that players compete against the dealer but not against any other players. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards. The name blackjack originates in the way the game used to be played. The highest combination of cards was a black jack with an ace of spades.
There are many different ways to play blackjack, and so there are many variants. In this explanation we use the standart variation that’s played at casino’s and online games.
All the cards have a value in blackjack. The cards 2 to 10 have the value of the number. The king, queen and jack are all valued 10. The ace reprisents 2 different values, namely 1 and 11. The player can decide whether it is worth 1 or 11, whichever is more favourable. You win if you have more points combined that the dealer, without getting more than 21. If you get more than 21 points you lose, and the dealer gets you bet. If the dealer gets over 21 points, he loses and the player doubles his of her bet. If neither gets over 21, the point totals get compared and the highest one wins. If the scores are equall, nobody wins and nobody loses.
To begin every player gets a card facing down, and one facing up. Then the dealer will ask everybody what they want to do. Players have 4 choices at this moment.
The first one is to double, the bet is doubled and you get only one last card. In many casino’s this is only possible when you have a score of 9, 10 of 11 with the first 2 cards.
The second possibility is splitting, although this is only possible if you have two cards of the same value. You split your 2 cards, then you place another bet , so both cards have a stake. The dealer will give both bets a new card, and you can play with two seperate hands.
The last 2 possibilities are passing, or requesting a new card.
Keep in mind that passing does not mean you lost. You pass if you are as close as possible to 21, without taking to much risk going over 21 points. If you have more points then the dealer you won.
